Ein Tausch ist ein Vorgang, bei dem ein Pokémontrainer einem anderen Trainer eines seiner Pokémon im Gegenzug für ein anderes Pokémon überträgt.

Alles, was ein Trainer zum Tauschen benötigt, sind zwei zu einander kompatible Editionen, zwei Systeme (Game Boy/Game Boy Color in Generation I und II, Game Boy Advance in Generation III und DS in Generation IV), ein Link-Kabel um die beiden Systeme zu verbinden (oder einen Wireless-Adapter in Feuerrot, Blattgrün und Smaragd) und (mindestens) ein Pokémon zum Tauschen. In Generation IV können Pokémon auch über die Global Trade Station getauscht werden.

Tauschen ist nötig um den Pokédex zu vervollständigen, da es einige Pokémon gibt, die nicht in jeder Edition erhältlich sind und andere Pokémon sich nur entwickeln, wenn sie getauscht werden.

Getauschte Pokémon entwickeln sich des weiteren schneller, da sie mehr Erfahrungspunkte erhalten.
